I was in my final stages of transitioning from relaxer to natural. I absolutely refused to do the big chop but instead I let my hair grow out and every so often I trimmed my relaxed ends as it took me about 2.5 years for my hair to be fully natural.
In that moment, I did not know what to do with my hair as I was tired of doing my basic go-to protective styles such as braids, flexi-rod sets, flat twists, buns, etc. So, I went to YouTube to see if there were any styling options I could do different to my hair. And from there is when I came across Crochet Braids and I was extremely surprised at how much the hair revamped from back in the day.
Once I began researching different crochet hairstyles on YouTube, I finally decided to install my very own. My first style was "Water Wave" curl by Freetress. The process of installing the hair for the first time was not great in terms of the duration. First, I had to learn how to braid my own hair which took forever and Secondly, learning how to use the crochet needle which if not positioned correctly gets caught in-between other braids and can be hard to pull through. After about 3 hours into the installation I finally got the hang of it and it came out amazing. I remember attending an event that same day and received soo many compliments and questions on my hair.
After my very first experience on my own hair is when others started to ask if I could do their hair. So, I began servicing friends; their children; and family. The most experience I could gain is hands-on. I started by practicing my craft in watching YouTube videos in finding different styles; practicing using my mannequin to understand the foundation and techniques used; and in-person experience with having clients to learn what works and doesn't work for me in gaining my own technique. I always get asked if I was ever taught professionally and the answer is no. I grew to have a passion for it and love when my clients leave feeling beautiful; so I decided I would give this un-hidden talent a shot.
After praying and seeking GOD whether I should make this into a side-hustle/business, I then felt great about putting myself out there. I started an account via Instagram in late 2016 and started gradually accepting clients in 2017 and from there now in 2022 it has blossomed into something I never imagined I would be doing. Over the years I've learned soo much and am continuing to perfect my craft.
